This game saw the welcome return of David Lilley, who played at right back as Queens reverted to a back four, and Derek Townsley who made his first and shortest appearance this season.Queens started well with Townsley looking dangerous attacking down the right wing and putting the ball into the box, something which had been sorely lacking in previous games. However, it was not to last. After fifteen minutes, a late challenge on Townsley, which the ref let go, provoked Degsy into a reaction. Personally, I did not see the incident and its doubtful if any contact was made, but if Townsley retaliated the resulting red card was inevitable.
The game went downhill from there. Arbroath showed no ambition at all and even on the goal did not really look like scoring, which was a good job as Queens lacked creativity and had few chances to take the game.
Even a man down, and not really playing well, Queens were by far the better team although without Degsy they were unable to break down Arbroath and an uneventful 0-0 resulted. The general consensus around me was that had Townsley stayed on Queens would have won this game and that is probably fair.
One point to mention is the performance of the referee absolutely diabolical. I hope this is not something I will be saying regularly, but I very much get the feeling that that is wishful thinking.
